Deliberative Democracy
Clubs

Exploring how deliberative practices can strengthen our communities and democratic institutions.

Background of Deliberative Polling™

Pioneered by James Fishkin at Stanford University's Deliberative Democracy Lab, Deliberative Polling™ attempts to answer the question: What would a representative sample of the public think about policy issues if it were more informed? And if they could weigh the pros and cons of different policy options under good conditions for thinking about them?

Deliberative Democracy Clubs aim to unlock the potential of Deliberative Polls.

What We Do

💬

National Deliberations

Chapters will participate in a nationwide online deliberation through the Stanford Deliberation Platform on the first Saturday of each month.

👥

Community Outreach

Club members and leads are encouraged to reach out to local community members to publicize upcoming deliberations.

Club Meetings

Chapters will use weekly club meeting times to review briefing materials before deliberations, understand deliberation structure, and brainstorm future topics.

Misc. Activities

Outside of monthly national deliberations, clubs have the freedom to run their own deliberations tailored to local communities as long as briefing materials are approved beforehand.

Our Story

The Deliberative Democracy Clubs movement began in July 2025 when a group of students recognized the growing polarization and lack of civil discourse among our communities. We noticed that meaningful dialogue was becoming increasingly rare, and we knew something needed to change.

What started as a small team coming together to address this challenge has grown into a network of high school chapters, each committed to fostering deliberative democracy in their communities. We believe that democracy works best when citizens are informed, engaged, and able to work together across differences to find common solutions.

Today, our network spans multiple high schools and continues to grow. We're proud to be part of a broader movement toward more deliberative, participatory democracy that values both individual rights and collective responsibility.
